Some interesting figures about People with Disabilities
A while ago I was reading the website for the National Organization on Disability (www.nod.org) . The following is information I found there and through other sources. These figures are about the United States.
Of the 54 million people in the U.S. who are limited in their activities due to long-term disability … * 73% are the heads of households * 46% are married * 58% own their own homes * 77% have no children * 48% are principal shoppers. Of the 69.6 million families in the U.S., 20.3 million families have at least one member with a disability. Before our economic downturn, among 18-29 year olds, only 57% of those with disabilities who are able to work are employed, compared to 72% of non-disabled in this are group. In the 18 - 64 age group, only 32% of Americans with disabilities are working.
On June 30, 2006, the U.S. Department of Labor announced nearly $14.5 million in grants to fund Disability Program Navigators in 13 States and the District of Columbia. This initiative aims to assist individuals with disabilities in accessing employment.
Access to well designed, professional clothing is a basic need for anyone looking for employment. The Fashion Moves Garment Design Competition will start to fill this need. The Competition guidelines will be posted soon.
